I can’t see anywhere on the list the essay she wrote in the blue pages at the back of the Children’s Encyclopaedia Britannica, called something like “How to Write a Historical Novel”.

We do have a copy, but it, along with an awful lot of our stuff, is in storage, and likely to be there for some considerable time. However, I work in a university library, and our School of Education library has a copy; I can see if I can get a scan of it. It won’t be until the end of this week,at the earliest, however.
There seem to have been several children’s encyclopedias published under the Britannica name, and endless spin-offs. The title in question is the Children’s Britannica, published in London for the British market. The original edition was 1960; ours is probably the 3rd edition, 1973, with various reprints and revisions through the 1970s. You’ll probably recognise it – the set with the red bindings which were ubiquitous in school and public libraries in the 1970s and ‘80s. I suspect the blue pages (and a lot of the rest) didn’t change from edition to edition. (I seem to remember another ‘blue pages’ article on how to start a skiffle band, which must surely have been there since 1960!) Anyway, the chances are that Rosemary’s article will be in any edition up to at least the 3rd.

Bad news. The School of Education can’t find the set of the Children’s Britannica, and think they may not have it any longer. We have not quite given up looking, as there are other places it might have been moved to, and a friend thinks they might still have a set at home.

Dear Anthony
I thought you might like to know that we are joining other residents in Walberton (near Arundel, West Sussex) in opening our garden at Swallowshaw to the public on the 18th June from 1.30pm- 5pm
Though we have made many changes to the planting during the 10yrs we have lived here, the shape and structure is very much as it was when Rosemary lived here.
We would be delighted if you or anyone else interested in seeing Rosemarys Sussex home, would like to come and visit Swallowshaw and the village for this Open Gardens event.
More details online:

Kind regards

Hello, just found this blog today. I was given a copy of “The Armourer’s House” on my ninth birthday, and was hoping to get a copy for my granddaughter, who is now 9. Do you know whether there are any floating around out there? Thanks!

Hello Anne
I keep hoping that I will turn up some Roman remains in my garden, but I think our estate is not sited on any actual remains. However, we are about to aquire an allotment near by and Dere Street runs parallel with the field, so you never know. I keep my eyes peeled when we dig – fingers crossed. I think my love of history comes partly from reading Rosemary Sutcliff’s books when I was young. I loved the way she brought history alive through her stories, rather than the dry books we used at school.

Hello Anne
Thank you for your reply, it was really helpful. I have no idea what information this letter was based on. I have sent a very polite reply which is going to be printed in the next village newspaper. I suppose I reacted a bit to this misinformation but I have been reading Rosemary Sutcliff’s books for over forty years and couldn’t let this inaccuracely stand.
It would have been really exciting to live in a place named in EOTN, we have an unexcavated Roman fort and vicus a few minutes walk from my house and Dere Street runs across the top of the village
boundary.

I’m jealous, Eleanor :) It must be wonderful to be able to visit ancient sites like yours and experience history so close at hand.

Hello Anthony, thanks for this information. I have been reading Rosemary Sutcliff’s stories for over forty years and she remains one of my favourite authors. I was sure that I would have known of any association between my village and The Eagle of the Ninth, but wanted confirmation. I will be replying to this letter and putting the record straight and will let you know if this person responds with anymore information. It may take a while, our village newspaper is quaterly!

Anthony, I obtained a copy of The Witch’s Brat – thank you so much for that – and really enjoyed re-reading it! I should have posted before.
The Eagle is indeed available on DVD and is on sale on Amazon. I don’t have a copy though.

I am delighted of course that you enjoyed re-reading it. If you are so minded, maybe you could write a few sentences here about what you enjoyed about it, why …?

Can anyone help please? I have just read a puzzelling comment in a letter published in our village newspaper. The author of the letter says ‘there is a film on DVD called The Eagle, based on the book Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff and much of the content takes place in Lanchester.
I live in Lancheser, Co Durham, we have an unexcavated Roman fort and settlement called Longovicium sited on Deer Street. I have been reading and re-reading The Eagle of the Ninth for over 40 years and have lived in Lanchester for 27 years and as far as I can tell have never heard of this before. Does anyone know anything about this or if this is true?

I am sure you are right – and delighted you re-read Rosemary’s book! I do not think any of the book takes place in Lancheser, that I recall. And non of the filming was there, and none of the film make sour that it is in County Durham.
Other regulars (and others, please) who know much more than I will maybe comment more or as well? Thank you for posting your comment. By the way, have you a copy of the letter?
Best wishes

Hi Eleanor
I’m wondering if your local paper got Lanchester mixed up with Silchester (called by its Roman name Calleva Atrebatum in the book), where quite a bit of the action in EOTN takes place. The novel was at least partly inspired by the Silchester or Calleva Eagle, a Roman artifact discovered near Silchester, athough it was not originally part of a military standard. RS even made her fictional eagle wingless like the Silchester Eagle.

There is a list of place-names which appear in “Eagle of the Ninth” at the back of the book and Lanchester/Longovicium is not among them.
It seems that most of the filming of the movie took place in Hungary and Scotland.
