Rosemary Sutcliff’s The Eagle of the Ninth and Warrior Scarlet have been listed by writer Philip Reeve as two of his favourite books, defined as ‘the books which mattered most to me while I was growing up … (which are) well worth tracking down’!.

Rosemary Sutcliff’s book The Eagle of the Ninth is the basis for The Eagle film (2011) which was released on February 11th in the USA & Canada, March 25th in the UK, and has been released wold-wide in recent weeks. Rosemary Sutcliff is billed as ‘co-writer’ of the film with Jeremy Brock. The director Kevin Macdonald has spoken of The Eagle of the Ninth and the film The Eagle as ‘a Western‘. Rosemary Sutcliff’s historical novel The Eagle of the Ninth was made into a BBC TV drama series in 1977.  (It is now about to be a film or movie, The Eagle). Made  by BBC Scotland, the TV series was  broadcast between 4th September and 9th  October 1977. The Eagle is a post-9/11 action-adventure movie about what our cultures (fathers, brothers, sons) have in common. Though set at the end of the world, it’s a fiction that remembers honor, liberty and friendship as ideals. It’s a fantastic vision of how The West was One.
