… white lilac in the hall, smelling of pure essence of nostalgia … (Diary, 17/5/88)

May 17th Tuesday. Into Chichester to have my eyes tested and see about new glasses; and in to the Shopwyck Nursery on the way home, to get a couple of shrubs and two more of the Busy Lizzies for the garden (courtyard). So hot! Really high summer; and the whole countryside white with may. Have white lilac in the hall, smelling of pure essence of nostalgia.

… having Tuesday on Monday this week for various reasons … (Diary, 16/5/88)

May 16th Monday. Having Tuesday on Monday this week for various reasons; Joan gone into Worthing for her day off, and Mrs Prosser here this morning.

The first part of the sentence is a very Romie-ish statement!. (I knew her as Romie).

… the banks frothing with Queen Anne’s lace … (Diary, 14/5/88)

Queen Anne's laceMay 14th Saturday. Lovely day, we took Muriel out for a run, and had our tea on the green at the White Horse at Chilgrove. May everywhere, and the banks frothing with Queen Anne’s lace. Very hot and sultry. The cuckoo calling this evening.
