UK Publisher OUP cannot spell own author’s name Rosemary Sutcliff

To my despair I discover today that a couple of years on from first pointing it out, Rosemary’s first publisher STILL cannot spell her name right – here in a ‘book box’ for schools. What sort of example is that?  I was onto them via our agents and it has made no difference..

I get cross when people who should know better spell Rosemary Sutcliff’s name wrong  – as Sutcliffe (sic). It is Sutcliff (sic). If you are doing research  in databases, or on the web or wherever, it is a good idea always to search for Sutcliffe (with an E) as well as Sutcliff! If I had not done that, I would not have discovered that in the UK’s newspaper of record (at that time), in a list of 50 books all children should read (The Times, 19 Feb 1988), ‘Eagles of the Ninth’ (sic)  was recommended  for 12 to 18 year olds ( the proper title is ‘The Eagle of the Ninth’), and it was said to be by ‘Rosemary Sutcliffe”.Read More »

OUP cannot spell Sutcliff name – no ‘E’

To my despair I discover today that even Rosemary’s first publisher cannot spell her name right – here in a ‘book box’ for schools. What sort of example is that? They presumably are responsible also for the standard ISBN records for this, which also get the spelling wrong. I shall be contacting them via our agents.
