This Rosemary Sutcliff blog has been suffering, whether for posts about her as an author, her children’s books and historical novels or new The Eagle of the Ninth film. Posting has been hindered by a new day job for the blog’s author – who is helping with the wonderful new Pontio project at Bangor University in North Wales.  

Pontio is all about connections and combining arts and sciences … and there are two more connections between Pontio (bridging, in Welsh) and Rosemary Sutcliff. First, performing today with Folk in a Box at the new Pontio visitor’s centre in Bangor in North Wales is Dom Coyote, otherwise known as Dominic Lawton, also of Kneehigh Theatre. He sat at the feet of Rosemary Sutcliff in her study in West Sussex some 20 years ago, the first child to hear her new story The Minstrel and the Dragon Pup. (Also part of Folk in a Box is the excellent Emily Barker, award-winning singer of the theme music for BBC TV series Wallander). Second, the theme for the landscaped park for the unique new Innovation and Arts Centre is the collection of Welsh medieval stories The Mabinogion, stories much beloved of Rosemary.

Yn ogystal â bod yn symbol diwylliannol i’r genedl a’r Gymraeg, bydd Pontio’n ganolbwynt i’r gymuned leol. Bydd pobl o bob oed yn gallu cyfarfod, cymdeithasu a mwynhau eu hunain mewn mannau cymdeithasol golau ac eang, parciau gleision, caffi s braf a’r amffi theatr awyr agored wych.
