… Sophie was a most enchanting old bitch, tiny, pretty, gay, loving and obviously intelligent … (Rosemary Sutcliff Diary, 19th June, 1989)

June 19th Monday. Over to Burgess Hill , Joan and I in absolutely blistering heat and returned with the most enchanting (? & naughty) old bitch, tiny, pretty & gay & loving, and obviously intelligent. … Everything in the garden bursting while you look at it …

Small Rosemary Sutcliff Diary Picture

The first day of spring but I don’t feel Spring-like in the least | Rosemary Sutcliff Diary | March 1st, 1991

This year, I shall post occasionally random excerpts on random days from Rosemary Sutcliff’s diary (last year for a while I did daily reproductions). From March 1st 1991:

The day which, most years, means the start of spring to me. But it is such a grey, miserable day and my ears, which I thought recovered from my cold, so bad again, that I don’t feel Spring-like in the least.

… clearing off letters … (Rosemary Sutcliff Diary, 15/9/89)

September 15th Thursday. Joan gone again, very het up about her Canadian holiday. Clearing off letters now that the postal strike seems, with luck, to be largely over. G came in the evening, very distrait.

Joan was one of Rosemary Sutcliff’s housekeepers, who took it in turns to live with her and keep house for several weeks at a time.

“Distrait”: absent-minded; distracted (from Collins Concise Dictionary).

… the house looking splendid … (Rosemary Sutcliff Diary, 3/8/89)

August 3rd Wednesday. The Wall coating chaps have finished and gone, leaving everything nice and the house looking splendid.

Sorry regular followers of this site and the diary entries in particular…trying to get up to speed again! I will over time post some missed entries. I may switch to posting just the more interesting entries, because of other demands upon my time and attention.
